Like the rest of the books in the “for Dummies” franchise, Yoga for Dummies titles break down the practice of yoga into the most practical and accessible applications.

Yoga for Dummies Books

The classic is Yoga for Dummies by Lilias Folan, Georg Feuerstein, and Larry Payne, published in 1999. Feuerstein is a noted yoga historian and practitioner and Payne is director of the Yoga Training Program at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. The book does its best to cover every aspect of yoga, from the myriad asanas performed in the fundamental Hatha yoga path to the layers of spirituality involved in the practice. It is considered to be an interesting overview and starting point for the yoga-curious.

In Power Yoga for Dummies, author Doug Swenson encourages the reader to “Pump up your body, mind, and spirit with Power Yoga.” This book is geared toward more athletic practitioners, with an emphasis on building strength and endurance. Broken out into beginner, intermediate, and advanced sections, it also has a special section for women and seniors.

If you’re looking beyond the physical application of yoga, try Meditation for Dummies. Through the Dummies website, you can get a special book and CD package with guided instruction from former Yoga Journal editor-in-chief Stephan Bodian, a licensed psychotherapist.

Yoga for Dummies Videos and DVDs

The Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies DVD featuring Sara Ivanhoe highlights what are called the “daily dozen”: 12 basic poses that form the foundation for continued practice. Many beginners have found this DVD a great yoga practice alternative. But, while Ivanhoe’s instruction is detailed and helpful, many don’t like the standard “For Dummies” tip indicator. In a book, it’s usually a checkmark in the margin, but on this DVD, it’s a “bong” noise that some find distracting.

Ivanhoe continued the Yoga for Dummies series with Beyond Basic Yoga for Dummies. Unfortunately, the sound effects are still part of the DVD. However, reviews indicate that this selection is the perfect next step for beginners on their way to a more advanced level. Many have suggested using the mute button to fully enjoy this DVD.

In Yoga Weight-Loss for Dummies, instructor Chris Freytag leads more experienced yogis on a fast, free-flowing sequence of yoga postures. Although it’s only 30 minutes, many feel it’s a powerful yoga session when you can’t go to class.

Getting Started on a New Lifestyle

There are a number of resources for those wanting to try yoga for the first time. But, experts recommend starting a yoga practice through a yoga class or studio first. The hands-on guidance of a certified yoga instructor helps you to learn proper postures and integrated technique, foster a better understanding of the practice, and tap into the mind-spirit connection.

However, if you can’t find a yoga studio or class that fits your schedule or special needs, the Yoga for Dummies series of multimedia may be just the key to getting you started on a new lifestyle path.
