The best resource for yoga music is your yoga instructor. If you’re in yoga class and the instructor plays something that really resonates with you, don’t hesitate to ask for the name and title. Yoga teachers consider their musical selections to be an important component to creating the best atmosphere for the class, so they’ve often done a lot of research into various artists. Also, many musicians attend yoga retreats and conferences to offer instructors the most recent projects, so your instructor will probably have the most cutting edge music to feature.

Here are a few other selections you might enjoy.

  • Deva Premal and Miten. This dynamic duo “play to nourish a longing in the heart for that which never dies – the experience of love and meditation.” The hugely popular Essence, released in 1998, is considered a yoga music classic. Other works include Dakshina, Love is Space and Satsang: A Meditation in Song and Silence. Visit their Web site for tour information and to subscribe to their newsletter.
  • Krishna Das. A master of the chant kirtan, Das has been producing devotional yoga music for decades. Fans rave over The Greatest Hits of the Kali Yuga and All One. Popular music followers might find it interesting that guitarist Walter Becker of Steely Dan and drummer Rick Allen of Def Leppard were two of the 70-plus musicians helping Das on the latter effort. Find more of his work and a tour schedule here.
  • Jai Uttal. For nearly 20 years, Uttal has pushed world music to the forefront of our consciousness. A great example is Music for Yoga and Other Joys. He offers many free downloads on his Web site.
  • Shiva Rea. A prime example of a yoga instructor who takes her music seriously, Rea, an internationally renowned yoga teacher, has helped compile numerous yoga music collections, including Yoga Rhythms and Yoga Trance Dance. Learn more about her here.
  • The Windham Hill Series. The record label Windham Hill has nourished and promoted the best new age artists for decades, so it’s no wonder that their yoga music selections are popular. Yoga Zone: Music for Yoga Practice and Yoga Zone: Music for Meditation are two wonderful examples.
