Yoga Journal

From LoveToKnow Yoga

Yoga Journal bills itself as the industry’s premier yoga magazine. Teachers and students alike use the resources found in Yoga Journal to gain a deeper understanding of the craft and further their practices in myriad ways.

Yoga Journal

Brief History of the Magazine

As with most things incorporating yoga, a small but dedicated collective decided in 1975 to enlarge and improve its community. The California Yoga Teachers Association produced the first Yoga Journal in May of that year. It was a total of 10 pages, distributed to approximately 300 people.

But members of the yoga community recognized the need for a publication that addressed the multi-faceted practice of yoga and by 1995, circulation had increased to 66,000 subscribers. In 2000, current owner John Abbott bought the magazine, had it redesigned and relaunched it. Subscribers now total more than one million.

American’s growing interest in yoga has certainly contributed to its success. Nevertheless, the style and content of the magazine, with a balance of honored tradition and modern innovation, keep it positioned as a top source of viable information for yoga practitioners.

Conferences and Yoga-Centered Travel

The practice of yoga is an ideology that the staff of Yoga Journal takes very seriously.

At least twice a year, the publications hosts yoga conferences at which practitioners of all levels can perfect their postures under the guidance of international yoga superstars like Rodney Yee, Seane Corn, Shiva Rea, Edward Clark, Aadil Palkhivala, Ana Forrest, Patricia Walden, Saul David Raye, Gurmukh Kaur Kahalsa and many others.

Spanning the globe, these conferences connect readers with the action of the craft. As an extension of that, the site offers information on numerous yoga-centered travel opportunities. This section of the site breaks yoga travel out by price and length/type of stay. From family-friendly yoga jaunts to restorative private getaways, there’s a travel excursion for any level.
