If you've never heard of Christian yoga, or "Christoga" as it has been dubbed in some circles, you should know that it is growing in popularity. Christian Yoga: The Debate

Many practitioners of yoga are very passionate persons; yoga is more than just an exercise for them, but rather a way of life. Many find it leads them to a higher consciousness in addition to a healthier body. Perhaps this is why some yoga enthusiasts are so heated on this issue.

Many secular or agnostic yoga practitioners find it offensive that anyone would deviate from the ancient Eastern yoga principles. Some are curious as to why Christian yoga even exists, as they disconnect yoga and religion altogether.

Then there is a large faction of Christian yoga practitioners who very much enjoy yoga, but who find it at odds with their beliefs. They understand that although yoga has been changed significantly over thousands of years, its foundation stems from the polytheistic deities of Hinduism. Some Christians consider this a direct violation of the first of the Ten Commandments, "You shall have no other gods before Me." They think there is no reason they cannot practice yoga, but do so while glorifying Jesus and not multiple eastern gods.

If the above describes you, then Christian yoga may be just the thing you've been looking for. However, you should be sure to find a studio that is open to this type of yoga, or better yet specializes in it. You can also find many excellent Christian yoga DVDs, that allow you to practice in your own home. You should also be aware that not everyone who practices yoga will find Christian yoga acceptable.

Options for Yoga Christian Music

To make the practice more suitable for you, use yoga Christian music. There are several types of Christian music you can choose from, including some albums specifically designed for use during a yoga class.

Many find instrumental yoga Christian music to be very soothing, and find that music without words makes for less of a distraction. Tami Briggs' album My Piece I Give You is full of instrumental, Christian songs played on the harp. Christian yoga instructors say this album is great for a yoga session and that Briggs' harp playing is heavenly. Janine Turner's Christian music CD, is another instrumental album. It contains 60 minutes of new non-vocal, meditational renditions of traditional hymns and an exciting new Christian praise vocal, "Raise the Roof." This album is also specifically designed for yoga classes.

Some prefer vocals and choose to listen to contemporary, inspirational Christian artists. Amy Grant and Nicole Mullen are two popular artists for this genre.

Still others choose to simply chant Bible versus or softly sing praise hymns while practicing yoga. This replaces the Sanskrit chants and "ohms" with chants that glorify Jesus. Many Christians even take their Bible along with them to a yoga session and pick out a verse to memorize and meditate on during that session.
