Tantra Yoga
From LoveToKnow Yoga
Tantra yoga works on the belief that not only are sexual feelings and contact acceptable, they can be used as a method to further enlightenment. This is a different philosophy from other yoga paths, some of which suggest that sexual involvement is actually damaging to the greater development of self. In this article, we'll explore the basic principles of tantra yoga.
The Theory Behind Tantra Yoga
Theories abound as to the purpose and meaning of tantric yoga. While most agree that the purpose is enlightenment and personal growth, the means for achieving the ends differs.
Kundalini
The Kundalini is the most powerful of all psychic energies. Tantrics believe in the power of sexuality, and kundalini is that energy. Kunadlini flows through the sushumna, a hollow conduit within the spine. The flow is up, and if the energy is able to reach the brain, divine illumination will follow.
Tantra yoga practioneers must first learn to release any blocks they have placed in their own path, to relax all body tensions, and to silence any mental chatter that would otherwise impede their progress. It is only after this is done that the yogi can find a partner. The partners must be ready to join and form a whole - using a tantric embrace.
Maithuna, the tantric lovemaking experience, involves a number of meditations and rituals. Using tantra yoga, the partners attempt to release the forces of the Kundalini energy. The process is not meant to be sexually exciting; quite the opposite, in fact. The end result is meant to be evolution of self.
Shakti, the Cosmic Mother
Abiding by the meaning of tantra, which is "expansion," a follower of Shakti focuses on the dynamic aspect of divinity, the Cosmic Mother. Through the use of spiritual energy, the tantric yogi works to expand his or her levels of consciousness and remove personal limitations that once would have held him or her back.
If you follow the path of the Shakti, then you do not believe that tantra yoga is concerned with sexuality, but is instead all about transmitting energy into higher channels. The Shakti follower believes that each person has both male and female aspects within, and tantric yoga will help to awaken these and combine then into a single life force.
Tantra Yoga Resources
There's a lot to learn about tantra yoga, no matter what your level of expertise might be. One look on Amazon.com shows a number of books and multimedia to aid your exploration.
Local bookstores, health and spirituality stores, and yoga studios may also offer a good selection from which to choose.
There are also some tantra yoga Web sites, each focusing on a particular segment of the belief. Tantra centers more on the Kundalini path of sexual and spiritual enlightment, also known as neo-tantra. Modern Seers offers information and retreats about the more spiritual elements of this path. Maha Siddah Dharma explores the many aspects of tantra yoga.
