Naked Yoga Men
From LoveToKnow Yoga
When doing naked yoga, men can find many motivations and benefits.
Places for Naked Yoga Men to Practice
The use of any clothing in exercise is a relatively recent development. The original Olympic athletes competed without wearing anything.
The idea of doing yoga in the nude is not a new one. Naturists, those who believe that almost any activity is better au naturale, believe that by practicing naked yoga, men and women expand their overall philosophy of health. Other new age health centers such as California's Esalen institute have integrated naked yoga as part of its body acceptance theories.
Some yogis have come to see the removal of clothing as a step toward becoming comfortable with the body, which is part of the goal of any yoga practice. The focus of naked yoga men is on the idea of yoga, not naked men. In fact, NakedYoga.net is an unaffiliated directory of various locations where naked yoga is practiced by both men and women.
In 1998, New York City yogi Jayadev "embraced the infinite" with a Midnight Yoga for Men class. Decades later, in San Francisco, George Monty Davis, known as the "Naked Yoga Guy", was arrested but not convicted for practicing on the waterfront in 2004. While many people express skepticism at the practice, they seem unable to find any way that it actually harms anyone.
Perceptions of Sexuality
It is difficult to overcome the cultural conditioning that associates nudity with sexuality, especially when doing an exercise as body-aware as yoga. Most places that provide spaces for naked yoga men do so with an awareness of the sensuality of the experience. The Dallas Naked Yoga for Men club, for example, intends "to provide an atmosphere of camaraderie, body-acceptance, and sensuality (not sexuality)." Other organizations and teachers vary in their focus on the sexual aspects of naked yoga, sometimes associating it with tantric techniques.
While most practitioners are gay, the classes usually welcome bisexual and straight men as well, providing the shared experience of yoga with naked women and men. Some locations insist that the members not talk to each other while on the premises before, during, or after the practice to emphasize the intention of yoga exercise as opposed to a social event. As more cities have spaces for naked yoga men to practice, the idea is becoming an accepted part of the growth of yoga culture.
