Free Yoga Exercises Online
From LoveToKnow Yoga
Anyone interested in practicing yoga can access free yoga exercises online in two main forms: video and verbal descriptions with sometimes visual aids to clarify the description.
Video Might Be More Helpful
Many people prefer the ease of a video because you can watch somebody else do the movement. While pictures help a verbal description of a pose, seeing someone get into and out of a pose can be very helpful for getting the pose right.
In addition, a video offers the benefit of listening to an instructor's expert advice while executing the pose, similar to being right in the yoga studio.
The one drawback of getting exercises online instead of going to a studio is that you won't get direct expert feedback from an instructor.
Free Yoga Exercise Videos Online
YouTube
YouTube offers an extensive selection of free yoga videos. While some videos are quite short, others are just as long as a yoga DVD you would buy at a store. These long ones are an exceptional resource because the DVDs cost up to $20 each; getting them for free online is a major cost saver.
On YouTube, try the videos from YogaToday, such as this great beginner session. In this video, the instructor explains everything in a slow, detailed manner.
Two other great videos in this series are the introductions to Ashtanga yoga and Kundalini yoga. These two videos, each one lasting around an hour, are good full-length yoga practices.
If you'd rather check out short video clips of yoga, try the Office Break yoga session. At 10 minutes, this yoga routine (although more simple stretching than a real yoga practice) offers the perfect break to re-energize you in the middle of a long workday. If you're falling asleep at your desk, this routine will wake you up and increase your productivity for the rest of the day.
Another good short option is this morning routine, which will awaken all your senses, physical and mental, and get you ready to face even the most challenging of days. The companion wind down routine is a great way to relax and center yourself before going to bed.
Other Free Yoga Exercise Sites
Trial videos are a wonderful way to test a particular instructor's style and decide how you want to continue your practice. At My Yoga Online, you can try a session before you buy it. YogaYak has a number of styles available by trial. Also review Yoga Today--with a free membership, you'll have access to weekly yoga sessions.
Scripted Free Yoga Exercises Online
If for any reason you prefer to use descriptions of yoga exercises instead of videos, there are plenty of excellent websites that offer in-depth information about individual poses. Putting together a series of these individual poses will create a full yoga practice similar to any practice in a studio.
Yoga Pose Gallery
The Yoga Pose Gallery offers a long list of the most commonly practiced yoga poses. Each pose has a picture of the pose with a detailed description of the pose itself, how to get into the pose, and what yogis of different skill levels can do to make sure that the pose is beneficial for their own practice.
Yoga Journal
Yoga Journal offers an excellent resource on their website: a digital library of yoga poses described down to the finest details in order to allow complete comprehension of the pose. Excellent photos further enhance one's understanding of how to execute the pose and where to focus one's attention in terms of improving the pose over time.
All of these free yoga exercises online can round out a centered yoga practice, whether you are a beginner or an experienced yogi looking for free routines to replace DVDs or expensive studio classes. Bookmark your favorite sites and use these free resources frequently!
