Children's Kundalini Yoga
From LoveToKnow Yoga
As yoga for kids becomes more and more popular, children's Kundalini yoga is taking on an important role within the practice of children doing yoga. While it's most often the case that yoga for children is not in only one type of yoga tradition, Kundalini yoga often enters into the mix of types of yoga used for children. Hatha yoga is another popular type of yoga to mix into a children's yoga class.
Kundalini Yoga
This type of yoga practice incorporates both yoga poses and meditation in order to tap into energy that is built up or stored inside the body (in various chakras). The Sanskrit word from which 'Kundalini' stems means 'that which is coiled up', or a serpent. Within the tradition of Kundalini yoga, one tries to release the coiled up energy that is waiting to be released inside one's own body.
This philosophy of recognizing, unearthing, and utilizing buried energy makes Kundalini yoga an ideal choice for children of all ages. In addition, children with ADD or ADHD are often recommended yoga practice (Kundalini included) in order to help learn to handle life's daily challenges.
Children's Kundalini yoga is gaining in popularity all the time, not only because parents, teachers, and counselors think that it is effective for kids, but also because many kids enjoy the practice. Whether your child has a need for some kind of yoga practice, or simply is interested in practicing yoga, Kundalini yoga could be a good option for him or her. Kundalini is one type of fun yoga for kids because it demands some athleticism as well as opportunities to meditate; while children are not always willing/able to meditate, the opportunity to blow off steam by using one's body vigorously is always welcome.
Children's Kundalini Yoga
Kundalini yoga classes for children should be taught by someone who has had both a Kundalini yoga teacher and a children's yoga teacher training. In order to teach such classes, one must be able to teach children well in addition to knowing the ins and outs of the practice and philosophy of Kundalini yoga.
Resources
Books and videos are both good sources from which to learn all about Kundalini yoga. Online videos on YouTube can introduce this type of yoga so that you can know more about whether it is an appropriate type of yoga in which to enroll your children. For example the Kundalini introduction with Gurmukh explains and shows some of the main points of Kundalini yoga. Another good informational resource is this news feature that goes into detail, but in an overview style, about Kundalini yoga.
Books are numerous on the subject of Kundalini yoga. No books specifically for Kundalini children's yoga exist yet, but reading books about this type of yoga will give you more insight into the practice as a whole. In addition, some books offer yoga poses within the Kundalini yoga practice; these poses can be practiced with children, as well as adults. A few Kundalini yoga books that are full of information are Kundalini Yoga, a basic resource with an overview of the discipline, and Kundalini: The Arousal of the Inner Energy, a specialized book for those with a sincere interest in understanding the most complicated aspects of Kundalini yoga.
Yoga Practice
For children, Kundalini can be a great type of yoga to practice. As with all yoga practice, look for a qualified teacher in your own geographic region to guide you into and through the practice of yoga.
